The People of the House (Ahl ul-Bayt)

Lecture by Shaykh Ahmad Mi’raj Riccio

Our love for Rasul (saws) is not complete until we love his family.

Who are the Ahl ul-Bayt?
– Ali, Fatima, Hassan, Husayn, and their Descendents
– The Mothers of the Believers
– The Banu Hashim and the Banu Mutalib (Tribes of the Prophet Rasul (saws)
– The Pious from the Ummah

“The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves, and his wives are [in the position of] their mothers. And those of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the decree of Allah than the [other] believers and the emigrants, except that you may do to your close associates a kindness [through bequest]. That was in the Book inscribed.” (Surant Al-Ahzab 33:6)

Mothers of the believers should be more beloved then our own mothers.

Banu Hashim – great tribe from Quraysh “Allah(swt) chose Ismail from the childern…” (Muslim & Tirmidhi). Banu Hashim chosen as best of tribes.

Tribes from Yemen – origin of Arabs

The Pious Muslims – “Do not come to me with your lineages on the Day of Resurrection! My family is ever God-wary believer”.

Ahl ul Bayt – every believer with taqwa

In hadith you can find great descriptions about Rasul’s (saws) immediate family and wives.

Thaqalayn – the two weighty matters
1) Quran
2) People of the House

Up to very recently people understood the connection between the family of Rasul (saws) and the Sunnah. It is our obligation that we help and support the family of Rasul (saws). Connection of our salvation also lies with his family. Some of his family is currently in Yemen. Rasul (saws) said that connected with the unity of this Ummah is the Ahl ul Bayt.

Khwarij – the first to break away from the Ummah during Ali’s time. Disagreement with the Prophet’s (saws) family and this resulted in fitna.

Imam Malik lived during the period of the rule of the Abbas (family of the Rasul(saws)). He had a severe injustice done against him by the governor of Medina. He was flogged when he was innocent. He said that “I am afraid of dying and meeting the Prophet (saws) with the shame that one of his family entered the fire because of me”. Imam Malik immediately forgave the governor.

We must not stop loving and praying for those of the Rasul’s (saws) lineage. By the mercy of Allah(swt) we have been guided but we are less deserving then the lineage of Rasul (saws) of good deeds.
